Thomas Taylor Bowls was started in 1796, so can reasonably claim to be the oldest bowls manufacturer in the world. Taylor bowls are sold worldwide but the company is still a Scottish family owned business. In fact, taking bowls and golf together, it can fairly be claimed that Scotland has a lot to answer for when it comes to sports involving hard round balls.
With seven different curved paths to the jack to choose from, indoor bowlers will generally go for Vector VS and Blaze, although skips may well use the Ace and some have been known to deliver an International. Outdoors, the Ace is probably the most popular, with some experienced skips enjoying the football pundits’ favourite accolade of ‘Getting in Behind’ with a beautifully judged Lignoid.

The International was reintroduced in 2016 with Taylor's Progrip to offer a wider draw than the Ace, making it the right choice for outdoor greens and medium paced indoor surfaces, especially for back end players.

The Bias II is manufactured using one of the world’s most popular synthetic leathers - Clarino. Easy clean: just wipe with a soft kitchen sponge rinsed in warm soapy water and allow to dry naturally. The `Super-Grip’ rubber sole with slashed tread and concealed flex channels provide the ultimate safety allowing water to escape without creating an aquaplane effect that can be so dangerous.
Thomas Taylor (Bowls) Ltd is one of four lawn bowls manufacturing companies. Between the four they own five brands.
That’s because one of them, Henselite, used two brand names – its own, and Almark. You’ll find more about the history of the Henselite and Almark brands on the Henselite page.
So as well as Taylor Bowls and Henselite, the other two bowls manufacturers are Drakes Pride and Aero. Taylor and Drakes Pride make their bowls in the UK, in Glasgow and Liverpool respectively.
Time to Market
Aero and Henselite/Almark manufacture in Australia. This generally means that there is a greater choice for bowlers choosing Drakes Pride or Taylor bowls, as ion pre-pandemic times they could be made to order in around 4 weeks. Now (2022) this has stretched out to around 12 weeks!
At the other end of the scale, Henselite/Almark tends to rely on three or four containers a year of bowls shipped over from Australia, and Aero too tends to keep reduced stock in the UK.
Taylor has the greatest range of bowls models on offer, catering for every position in a team, and indoor, outdoor and all-weather surfaces.
