Green Speed

Why is a 20 second green faster than a 10 second green?
This is one of those counter‑intuitive things in bowls—but once you see the physics, it makes perfect sense.

🎯 The key idea

👉 Green speed (in seconds) is the time a bowl takes to slow down and stop

NOT how fast it initially travels.

🧠 Why a 20‑second green is faster

✅ On a “fast” green (e.g. 20 seconds)

  • The surface has low friction
  • The bowl:
    • Slows down very gradually
    • Keeps rolling for longer
  • So it takes more time before it stops

👉 Result: longer time = higher seconds = faster green

❌ On a “slow” green (e.g. 10 seconds)

  • The surface has higher friction (often called a “heavy” green)
  • The bowl:
    • Loses speed quickly
    • Stops sooner
  • So it takes less time to stop

👉 Result: shorter time = lower seconds = slower green

⚖️ Simple analogy (makes it click)

Think of rolling a ball on two surfaces:

  • Ice (fast surface)
→ Ball rolls for a long time
→ Takes longer to stop ✅
  • Carpet (slow surface)
    → Ball stops quickly
    → Takes less time ✅

📐 Why this happens (physics in plain English)

  • The ramp always gives the same starting speed
  • After that, everything is about friction

From physics:

  • Less friction → slower deceleration → longer stopping time
  • More friction → faster deceleration → shorter stopping time

👉 That’s why:

“On a fast surface the bowl doesn’t slow down as quickly and takes longer to stop.”jackhighbowls

⚠️ Why it feels backwards

Normally we think:

  • Faster = less time

But in bowls:

  • You’re measuring how long the bowl keeps rolling, not how fast it starts

So:

  • Fast green = bowl keeps going → more seconds
  • Slow green = bowl dies quickly → fewer seconds

📊 Typical ranges

  • 9–11 sec → slow / heavy green
  • 12–14 sec → average / good
  • 15–19 sec+ → very fast greencosburnbowls

🎯 Practical effect for players

On a 20‑second (fast) green

  • Use less effort
  • Bowl travels further with gentle delivery
  • Needs wider draw (more curve)

On a 10‑second (slow) green

  • Use more effort
  • Bowl loses pace quickly
  • Needs straighter line

✅ One‑line summary

👉 A higher seconds reading means a faster green because the bowl takes longer to lose its speed and come to rest, not because it started faster.
