You can’t start too soon! In my role as a Hertfordshire junior coach I have children as young as five coming along to our Saturday morning coaching sessions. Children’s bowls, also called Junior bowls, are designed to get them playing and having fun.
We coach them both in age-groups, and also together with juniors of all ages in different sessions and exercises. The enjoyment is palpable, not just the kids but the parents and grandparents who bring them every week.
In fact the participation of the parents, grandparents and carers is often the key to the young bowlers’ enjoyment, as they see how much pleasure they provoke in the adults.
Because the adults and carers aren’t just taxis dropping off kids in order to get a couple of child-free hours on a Saturday morning. Every one of them, without exception, stays at the club and spectates at the coaching sessions as if they were watching an entertaining club game.
So if you have children, or grandchildren, get some of these bowls into their hands as soon as possible, so they get used to playing around with them in the garden long before they set foot on a rink.

Taylor Ace Junior
£180.00Taylor Ace Junior series bowls are ideal for small hands. Depending on their hand size, these bowls can be used on the bowling green by children as young as five or six. They are designed exactly like adult bowls and perform with bias and weight similar to the Ace model.

Drakes Pride Professional Junior
£180.00Based on the profile of the DP Professional model at just 98.5mm these Junior bowls are superb for young bowlers unable to handle regular sized bowls. At this size the bowls do not comply with World Bowls rules so they cannot be stamped with the WB stamp or used in some tournaments, but they are great for introducing children to the sport.

Bowlsbuddies Bowls
£99.00These coaching/training bowls come in red and blue colours, with yellow jacks of the same size.
They're about 200g (7oz) in weight and are all the same size and shaped like a normal bowl – about 10cm (4 inches) high (diameter) and 9cm (3.5 inches) in width. There are ridges incorporated into the running surface of the bowls to help stop them on hard surfaces. They have a ‘stress ball’ type feel and are easy to handle by very young children (around aged 4 upwards). The bowls have a strong bias to ensure children can understand how bowls turn. They will turn more on indoor and hard surfaces.

Bowling Wedge
